The long anticipated modernized version of the 3800 was released in December, 2014. The modernized version contains numerous upgrades to the original in addition to the items of modernization:

  • Switching pilot or road pilot
  • Modern smokebox handrails
  • 3 ring stack, stacks with both raised and lowered deflectors
  • Drifting valves
  • Relocated running boards
  • Foam meter
  • Disk main driver
  • Lightweight rods
  • Extended cab with 3rd seat
  • Cab visor
  • Improved tender light
  • Tender sand box
  • Improved tender tool boxes
  • Tender backup light and conduits
  • Choice of road or switching tender details (headlight on tender deck, footboards)
  • Santa Fe on the tender
  • Numbers for helpers on Cajon and Raton and for operation on the Plains Division.
