| The long anticipated modernized version of the 3800 was released in December, 2014. The modernized version contains numerous upgrades to the original in addition to the items of modernization:
- Switching pilot or road pilot
- Modern smokebox handrails
- 3 ring stack, stacks with both raised and lowered deflectors
- Drifting valves
- Relocated running boards
- Foam meter
- Disk main driver
- Lightweight rods
- Extended cab with 3rd seat
- Cab visor
- Improved tender light
- Tender sand box
- Improved tender tool boxes
- Tender backup light and conduits
- Choice of road or switching tender details (headlight on tender deck, footboards)
- Santa Fe on the tender
- Numbers for helpers on Cajon and Raton and for operation on the Plains Division.
