Stack Extenders for ATSF Steam Engines

Hinged Can

Both the Hinged Can and the telescopic stack were designed to improve draft to the firebox, much like the "elephant ears" on other steam engines. (Evan Werkema)

The hinged can was an additional stack hinged from the top of the fixed stack. There were two variations on these as well.

A. Some were hinged from the front of the stack so they would rest in front of the stack when in the down position.

B. Some were hinged from the back of the stack so they would rest behind of the stack when in the down position.
