400 Series Superintendent's Car

Models

HO

In the 60s Hallmark produced an HO model of the 400 class. It matches well the 404 as it appeared in the early 50s before air conditioning was added. These appear on ebay from time to time and were selling in the spring of 2006 for $165-225. The Hallmark model was reviews in the March/April 1985 issue of the Santa Fe Modeler. The brake cylinder, roof vents, car end steps are undersize castings. The roof mounted expansion tank is also undersized. The underbody is largely void of details. The cast trucks are 8'9" instead of 9'.

Walthers also made a model of the cars in the 60s, 933-6663. These had stamped metal sides and wooden roofs - a quality kit for the time but low in detail by today's standards.

Coach Yard has announced plans to produce an HO model in late 2006 (currently anticipated in 2014). These should be "state of the art" with a price to match. It is unknown at this time what the exact prototype or time frame has been chosen for this model.

No commercial kits are available for these cars. However, Russell Straw has kitbashed one and sent us the photo.
