Roswell is noted for the UFO incident which happened on July 7, 1947. What is not noted is the Roswell Army Airfield was the location of the only SAC air wing capable of nuclear weapon delivery in 1947. All the B-29s (some 15) which delivered the weapons on Japan were part of the 509th group stationed at this time at Roswell Army Airfield. The high security at the Airfield probably caused much of the speculation about what happened on July 7. The following year the Roswell Army Airfield was renamed Walker Air Force Base.
