Stack Extenders for ATSF Steam Engines

Scoop Deflector

Evan Werkema called these "Smokebonnets."

Richard Hendrickson reported: "These were developed on the Valley Division of the Coast Lines and applied only to locomotives assigned there, at least until the end of steam when a few of them migrated to other parts of the system with their "smoke benders" still in place. Their purpose was not to improve draft or reduce smoke trailing, as were the telescoping extensions on the 4-8-4s and 2-10-4s or the hinged "can" extensions on the 3400 4-6-2s. Rather, they were intended to prevent the stack exhaust from rebounding off the tunnel roofs and into the cabs on locomotives that ran through the long Franklin tunnel in the Contra Costa hills and through the numerous tunnels on the joint SP-ATSF line over Tehachapi Pass between Bakersfield and Mojave. How well they worked I can't say, but virtually all of the locomotives assigned to this part of the system had them beginning ca. 1942 except for the 3800 class 2-10-2s, which had Style A Scoop Deflectors (perhaps because clearance limits on Tehachapi wouldn't allow Style B). On some classes (3450, 3700, 4000) the bell had to be moved to the top centerline of the boiler ahead of the stack in order to make room for the Style B stack extensions when in the lowered position. Like other ATSF stack extensions, they were air operated."

The scoop deflector was hinged from the back top of the stack. There were two variations on the way these looked.

A. This design rested in the down position in front of the stack.

Photos of engines 3751 and 3759 have this design.

Most of the Coast Lines 3800 class 2-10-2s had Style A Scoop Deflectors (3830-3899 and some higher numbers).

B. The other scoop design rested in the down position behind the stack.
